One of the prime reasons for undertaking a course in Product Design is my passion for the aesthetic input into product design. I greatly enjoy manipulating the fundamental elements of a design in order to derive new and refreshing concepts. Above all, product design allows me to draw knowledge from a wide range of sources, allowing me to improve my skill base.

Sophie’s Exhibition Information.

Head injuries from falls are the main sources of severe injuries and deaths in horse riding activities. Helmet design has improved dramatically over the last decade offering a high degree of protection. There are various reasons to explain why riders often fail to wear this life saving piece of equipment. My brief was to design protective headgear addressing the two key issues of excessive heat and aesthetics.

Following a thorough investigation through the use of surveys and interviewing the end-user, the project evolved from a focus on a solid helmet offering full head protection into an alternative option open to riders. This alternative option encompassed a helmet offering slightly less protection to the rider (but clearly more protection than none at all) in the style of the common baseball cap.

The main aim of the study was to fully understand the needs and habits of the end-user and address these through the scientific use of materials.

In the course of conducting this research project I gained inspiration and acquired an insight into associated fields such as the protection offered in the car industry as well as packaging design. Creative testing techniques were employed in order to better understand the shock absorption qualities of various materials.
